As we were getting ready for school this morning, Junior complained of a headache.  Being the caring, great, fantastic, spectacular and wonderful mother that I am, I measured out 2 tsp of children’s acetaminophen, rushed him to drink it and we scooted out the door approximately 3 minutes behind schedule.  I had every intention of sending his teacher an email letting her know that he had complained of a headache before leaving for school and to call me if he continued to complain.  Being the busy, hardworking, overwhelmed, stressed mom that I am, I totally forgot!  Not even an hour later my phone rang.  My first thought, “Please don’t let this be the school calling me to pick up Junior because he is sick.”  Am I a bad mom?  Have you ever been there?

So, I asked them to give me 15 minutes and I would be right there to pick him up.  When I got to the school they called him back to the office.  He had to go back to his classroom to get his backpack and homework.  As soon as he saw me his eyes welled up with tears.  He’s my dramatic child.  In his defense, he got it from his mama. 😬  (For real, I was the thespian in my family, growing up.)  I immediately gave him a hug and assured him that I would take care of him and help him get better.  You didn’t know I am an M.D.?  A Mommy Doctor, that is.  😉

On the way home he asked if he could watch TV when we got home.  (Rule #1: No TV or video games during the school week.) Rx #1: TV and video games when you come home from school sick.  Rx #2: Would you like Mommy to fix you some hot tea?  Rx #3:  Let me sit beside you on the couch.

A few minutes later, I asked, “How do you feel?  Are you feeling better now?”  His perfectly-rehearsed response, “Yes, ma’am.  A little bit.”.  Of course, you don’t want to feel too much better.  You might have to go back to school.  After an afternoon of being nursed back to health, along with some more meds Junior seems to be feeling just fine.  However, he manages to sprinkle in just the right amount of,  “Ooooh, my head hurts.” at just the right times.  😆

Sometimes moms make the best doctors!

This Could Have Been Us

On Saturday, the Facebook page Kisses for Kycie posted the news that she died at 5 years old, six months after being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. She was diagnosed while in Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) just as my son Super F was. The difference was that Kycie was diagnosed in a more advanced state and suffered seizures and brain damage as a result. She spent months in the hospital while trying to recover from the severe injuries to her brain and body. We were fortunate that Super F didn’t suffer these terrible complications, though he spent several nights in the PICU when he was diagnosed at 2-1/2 years old. The symptoms for Super F came on suddenly, and had we waited much longer to get him into the doctor, we might have been the ones to lose our child.

If anything can come from the death of Kycie, I hope it is to spread awareness of the symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes so that no other child will die from a missed, or late, diagnosis. So, please, if your child experiences the following symptoms, please get to a doctor right away and request a blood glucose test.

Grown Ups are Lazy!

As I was playing frisbee with Junior and Kid Flash last week I spent the whole time telling them I was going inside soon because I was tired.  I was literally drained.  Then Kid Flash, in a moment of brilliance, made the following observation.  “You don’t have no energy.  Grown ups are LAZY!”  OUCH!

I could take this opportunity to rattle off all the statistics about what percentage of Americans are obese and overweight.  Or the percentage of Americans who suffer from diabetes, heart disease and high cholesterol.  But, the only person who matters right now is YOU, Mommy!

In a previous post, “Hey! What About Me? (Update)”, I shared the beginning of my journey to start taking care of my physical health…for the umpteenth time.  I committed to physical exercise, in the form of walking.  I also began a daily regimen of starting my day with hot water with lemon and drinking water infused with lemon and strawberries throughout the day. 

Huh?  What did you say!  You wanna know how it’s going?  Well, I am happy to report that I am still walking, literally I am walking as I type this post. [I know, I know, but it’s the only way I can get it in.  It’s called multitasking. MommyWurk, remember?]  And I am still drinking all of my water.  [Sidebar: I pee all the time now.]   I also tried a new recipe from 100 Days of Real Food.  I finally stopped reading and starting DOING.  The Kale and Apple salad was delish!  I was able to get a bunch of kale from Food Lion for only $0.99.  Who the heck said healthy, whole food is expensive?  And, kale is not any old regular healthy, whole food.  It’s a superfood.

Now, don’t misunderstand me.  I haven’t turned into one of those “all or nothing” chicks.  I am a firm believer that moderation is the key.  Otherwise, you fall off the wagon and are too embarrassed to get back on because you feel like a failure.  So, I have given myself permission to take a junk break, but I don’t go overboard.  For instance, last night for dinner I had 2 small pieces of cheese pizza and a half a can of Coke.  Oh yes, she did!  I hadn’t had a Coke in a whole week after previously drinking 1-2 cans/day.  Yaaay for me!  That’s a major improvement.

The moral of the story:  Eating healthy + Exercise = Energy

Hey! What About Me? (Update)

I know that moms are supposed to be selfless and not selfish, always putting our children and others first.  But, there comes a time when we have to slow down and make sure we are taking care of ourselves so we can give those who depend on us our best.  For me, that time is NOW!

On Mother’s  Day I published  a post entitled, “Hey! What About Me?“, encouraging us not to neglect ourselves, thinking we have to wait until Mother’s Day to take care of ourselves.  It’s time for me to practice what I preach.

I am also going to clean up my diet.  So, this morning I am starting with some warm water and fresh lemon.

I am also quitting caffeine (in the form of Coke) cold turkey, which means good ‘ole H2O all day.  The last hotel I visited had strawberry and lemon infused water in the lobby.  I decided to try it at home.

This pitcher is about half full and I will work on drinking this all day today.

I realize, I’m worth it!
