Make More or Spend Less?

I have been contemplating lately whether I should get a part-time job to help supplement our income.  Since my husband left Corporate America to accept his call into full-time ministry and I took a significant pay cut to pursue my dream job of physician recruiting (which also allows me to work from home), our financial situation has changed significantly.  My husband is convinced that we have to learn how to make due with less.  So, in preparation for our career changes we got rid of/sold a lot of stuff and downsized.  As I have thought about a part-time job, I have also been trying to figure out when in the world I could fit it in.  Between my full-time job, family commitments and household responsibilities, it would be darn near impossible to also hold down a part-time job.  So, I started thinking…maybe instead of trying to make more money I need to put my energies into figuring out how to spend less money.  I mean the result would be the same, right?  Adding $1000/mth is the same as subtracting $1000/mth.  Disclaimer: $1000/mth is a random figure; I just chose it because the math is easy.

Our society has gotten so obsessed with having more, more and more that I have gotten caught up in that same mentality.  I find myself constantly seeking to be more, do more and have more.  Well, I’m tired of trying to keep up, so I give up.  I’ve decided to move in the opposite direction.  I am committed to trying to do less and have/spend less.  You’ve heard of the Minimalist Movement, haven’t you?  Where individuals or families seek to get by on/with as little as possible, allowing for a more simple existence, with less stress (hopefully).  Of course, with every movement comes extremes, which I do not recommend.  I simply (no pun intended) want to be on the spectrum.

Cute, but a little too minimal for my taste.

In the spirit of a little friendly competition and to help keep me accountable I would like to propose a small challenge – let’s just call it the “Spend Less Challenge” for now.   Each Friday I (we) will share how I (we) saved money by spending less during that week.  I am hoping to get some creative ideas from our brilliant readers/supporters. 😉

Let the games begin!

Until next time-

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19-21 NIV)

God’s best-
