Oh Rainy days. What do you do when you can’t get outside?
We do all kinds of things. We ride bikes in the house. We play in our playroom with the tee-pee and chalk board.
H, helps with clean up chores and we sing silly songs, but all of that doesn’t take nearly as long as you would think. That is where my super secret weapon comes in handy. I guess it isn’t really so secret, but you know what I mean.
I have a special drawer in our kitchen. It has lots of fun stuff stashed in it: Play Doh*, Do A Dot Markers*, crayons, construction paper, a make your own pizza kit, water color paint and paint book… You get the idea. Inevitably I need to cook lunch, dinner or both and on a rainy day it is usually a little harder because the kiddos aren’t as tired as they normally are from running around outside. Times like these are when the drawer really comes in handy and helps direct their attention in a positive way.
I strap H in his chair at our kitchen island table and start with an activity of his choice. He usually chooses Play Doh. Then I change out the activities until lunch or dinner is served.
What do you do on rainy days, or any days to help keep the kids positively engaged?
